It’s Storm Season in Seattle

May 27th, 2011 by Shelley Goulding

Seattle Storm mascot Doppler visited 9 Cranes Inn on Valentine's Day.

This weekend previews what promises to be another exciting season of Storm basketball. If you don’t follow the WNBA, you’re missing out. These women demonstrate athleticism, competitive spirit, and perhaps most enjoyable (dare I say different from the NBA) – a selfless, play-as-a-team approach that makes being a fan really fun. The Storm will defend its 2010 WNBA Championship this year, with a good chance of repeating. All of the starters – Sue Bird, Lauren Jackson, Tanisha Wright, Camille Little, and Swin Cash – are back, and the team boasts a strong bench. Fans and wannabe fans can storm the lake this Saturday – meet the team at the north end of Green Lake from 2 to 4 p.m.  And Sunday is the final pre-season game against Tulsa before the real season kicks off on June 4. GO STORM!

You say “football” I say “soccer”

I’m kinda new to the soccer scene, having attended my first Seattle Sounders match only this year. Wow. The fandom rivals anything I saw while living in Denver, which is truly a sporting town. And you can’t beat the colors. Electric. I still need some time to understand the chants, the claps, and the rules, especially that adding time thing at the end. But it’s fun, and apparently quite civilized compared to the soccer experience in other parts of the world. At least that’s what the Europeans with whom I’ve watched two recent matches tell me. The season runs nine months of the year (February-October), so there’s always an opportunity to catch some Sounders action. I’m not sure I’ll be wearing that long, warm scarf in July, though.
